Games/Sega Mega Drive

I first saw this console at my grandparents' place. My uncle had bought the console, and wanted to show it off to the rest of the family, I guess. It featured the game Sonic the Hedgehog, naturally.

I don't remember when we got this console, but what I do remember is that we got it because my the parents of one of my cousins decided that it would be better if he didn't have access to a game console due to homework or something along those lines. I don't really remember, but we were given the console.

Because this is the only SEGA console I've ever owned, I'm going to refer to this console simply as SEGA throughout the rest of this page for simplicity's sake.

Games we had

The console came with three games, my dad bought two more at a later time. I've listed the games below in the order they were aquired, then in order of preference.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Compared to the other Sonic the Hedgehog games on the SEGA, I didn't play this game that much. By the time I got the SEGA, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 had already been released, and this game felt lacking compared to the two. Regardless, I did spend many hours playing this game, but I've completed it only a few times. Mostly I would use the level select cheat to play the level I wanted to play rather than go through the game from the start.

Never played this game much. I'm not even sure the one I had was a genuine SEGA cartridge. The cartridge looked different from all the other SEGA cartridges I had.

FIFA Soccer 95

Anybody who knows me knows that I don't care much for soccer. However, this game I played quite a bit, mostly because of a friend of mine who was very into soccer. We had a lot of fun playing this game, despite my general dislike of soccer.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

A friend of my dad's was selling off some SEGA games for some reason, so my dad and I drove to their place and we got to borrow all of their games. My dad told me that I could pick two of them to keep. One of the games that I wanted to keep was Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Actually, it was kind of decided even before I started playing any of their other games. After all, ever since I first saw him, I've always been a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog. Naturally then, I wanted to own this game.

This is probably the Sonic the Hedgehog game that I've played the most. Although I'm probably a little rusty now, at my peak, I knew more or less every location, secret and whatnot there was to know about this game.

Taz-Mania

This is the second of the two games we bought of that friend of my dad's that sold their SEGA games. In retrospect, it was a horrible choice. First, I never got very far in this game. I don't even know if this game has bosses in it, because I never made it to the first boss. Suffice to say, I never made it past the first level either. Second, they were selling off many other games, and many of them were a lot better than this one. I consider it one of my greatest lapses in judgment of all time to choose this game.

Games others owned, or games rented

I had two friends in elementary school who both had SEGAs. They both also had tons more games than I ever had, and I spent a lot of time at their places playing SEGA games. I also borrowed a lot of games from these two friends of mine.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

One of the two best Sonic the Hedgehog games ever made, this game has been played so many times, over and over and over. I simply love this game, and I can still play this game from start to end without ever getting tired of it.

I'm not sure exactly what fascinates me so much about this game, but the way to become Super Sonic is surely one of them. It's probably also related to the fact that my Sonic the Hedgehog interest was at its peak at the time. This game, however, is only half the fun...

Sonic & Knuckles

I never played this game much on its own. That was not its charm. I mean, sure, it had a story on its own, but that story was actually the other half of the story from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

Together, the two games made the best Sonic the Hedgehog game ever made. The full game had three characters with four character modes, (You could choose Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and be Sonic and bring Tails with you) each character had a different storyline, and the number of levels varied from 12-14, I believe, depending on which character mode you chose, and how many of the Chaos and Super Emeralds you had collected.

In addition to becoming Super Sonic or Super Knuckles when collecting all the Chaos Emeralds, you could also collect Super Emeralds and become Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles or Super Tails.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Knuckles

When you connected the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, you got to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with Knuckles as the main character instead of Sonic. Since Knuckles doesn't jump as high as Sonic does, certain things in the game become a little more challenging. On the other hand, since Knuckles can glide through the air and climb up vertical walls, he gets certain other advantages. It's not an entirely new game, but it makes Sonic the Hedgehog 2 different enough that it feels worth playing through once more.

Ristar

I didn't play this game much, I watched a friend of mine play it. It was a fun game though, even if it's been so long ago, that I strictly don't remember anything about it, other than that the main character was a star.

Final words

There you have it. The games I played on the SEGA. Of the games I've mentioned, my top three favorites were Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Pretty much Sonic the Hedgehog all the way there...
